My research into hollow-ware votive figures of the 6th to 2nd century BCE began in 2019 with a short residency at the American Academy of Rome to view and photograph the small but indicative number of female figures in the AAR archaeological collection. From these photographs I’ve developed several bodies of work: large-scale painted and drawn works on paper; costumes for video performance trials; and a still-growing series of works on paper based on the vent shape of one particular object (AAR—79C) including two letterpress editions. I was awarded a Fellowship from the Australia Council to return to the AAR in 2022 to develop the project further.
